Exploring Stykkishólmur

To my horror, my day off in Stykkishólmur coincided with a work holiday for the town, and all the shops and most of the restaurants were closed. I poked around town for a bit, then got a snack at the one café that was still operating, and tried to catch up on work, photos, and correspondence. No big battery-recharging meals for me today.
As I sipped my hot chocolate I pondered the one real decision I needed to make: Do I take the ferry boat north from here, or do I head east along the same peninsula?
Heading north would give me the chance to see Flatey island, and get at least a glimpse of the Westfjords, but then I would have to get back to the main road by going down highway 60 — a winding coastal route infested with hills and very few services. It would cost me two extra days. Instead I could stay on highway 54 and save that time for later … but according to the map, highway 54 turned into dirt and gravel just outside of town, and stayed that way for miles.
I did some reading online about Flatey. It just seemed too quaint and scenic to miss. Tomorrow I would board the ferry and head north.

Back in the planning stages for this trip I’d noticed there was a strange museum in this town called the “Museum Of Water“. That sounded pretty cool so I made sure it was on the itinerary.
When I got to the top of the hill where the museum was situated, the door was locked, and a sign next to it informed me that if I wanted to buy a ticket for admission, I’d need to trek over to the information center downtown. I leaned my head against one of the windows and peered inside. Just a bunch of columns of water, apparently. They didn’t even look different from each other. Maybe I should just skip this thing…

At the end of this relatively lazy day, I went over to the hamburger truck and got myself a lamb burger. They’d served so many customers due to the holiday that they were completely out of french fries. The burger was still tasty, though.
These folks were open until 10:30pm, and were the only "restaurant" still open the night I arrived. Good food!
